Worker Shares

Field Worker Shares

We LOVE Worker Shares.

This is ideal for anyone who wants to get dirty and sweaty, get a free work out, or anyone who has spare time (and maybe less spare money) and wants to spend their time outside working with us!

How it works:

  • Worker Shares work 4-hour shifts either weekly (for Full Shares) or every-other week (Half Shares)
  • We send you home with a box/bag full of produce

What to expect:

  • Standing, kneeling, squatting, lifting, walking all four hours
  • Assist us with weeding (mostly), seeding, transplanting, trellising, harvesting, laying landscape fabric, row covering, and more!
  • Working with a wonderful crew of other people. Worker Share days are SO much fun. We have young and mature folks, people who grew up around here and people from far away, students, parents, grandparents, entrepreneurs, crafters, thinkers, and more. It can feel like a real community event.
  • I've heard many people say that their first couple of weeks were exhausting. It is hard work, and if you aren't used to doing physical exertion outside, it can be difficult at first. But you will get used to it! And we don't expect you to be busting your butt the whole time, so you can pace yourself appropriately.
  • Shifts are 9:00am - 1:00pm Wednesday or Saturday

If you want to be a Worker Share, just sign up for our CSA and make sure to check the "yes" in the "interested in Worker Share" question. Email us if you have questions! squashingtonfarm@gmail.com You can also fill our our google form: Apply Here

Baby-sitting Shares

What is this?

We welcomed our first child in April of 2022 and our second in September of 2023! We were so lucky to have a team of wonderful "sitter-shares" to help us through that HUGE transition.

This is where you can come in! If you enjoy children, babies, entertaining little ones and making sure they don't die, you might be perfect!

This position is much like our Field Worker Share position expect rather than helping with field work, you will keep an eye on our little nuggets, Hazel and Reishi! A four-hour shift will get you a box/bag of produce! Hazel is a super fun, pretty chill, funny, and out-going little kid with a wild streak and Reishi is a very opinionated, coordinated, silly toddler.

We have different time slots open ranging from Mondays-Saturdays.

Field Crew Members

Job Description

Squashington is a small-scale, certified-organic, CSA , wholesale, and farmers market farm. Much of what we do is by hand, with non-mechanized tools. We recently purchased our own farm (!) so will be expanding slightly from our 3-acre production. Our farm is very dynamic, diverse, and ever-evolving. We are looking forward to hiring two part-time crew members from April - October to join our team to grow healthy, nutritious, high-quality food for our community. We want to foster a happy and healthy work environment and would love to retain committed employees long-term.

*We are also proud to be part of the Organic Vegetable Farm Manager Apprenticeship Program through FairShare CSA Coalition. If interested in participating, please indicate this in your statement.

**Another exciting opportunity for someone with prior experience looking for full-time employment is in the works! We can partner with Atoms to Apples to "share" an employee. This means the qualified individual gets experience on a veggie farm as well as an organic apple/mixed fruit orchard! If interested, please indicate in your email**

Things to Expect:

  • Working in all weather conditions all the time
  • Standing, bending, squatting, lifting for hours at a time
  • Harvesting, washing, weeding, seeding, trellising, packing, sorting, animal husbandry, cleaning, organizing and more!
  • Taking verbal and visual instructions
  • Learning on the job and applying what you learned every day
  • Hard work. We won't lie- farming can be really hard physically and emotionally, but it is some of the most gratifying work too
  • Multitasking. So many things happen every day, and often times we need to be doing many things all at once. Being able to keep track of several things is extremely valuable.

Things We Expect

  • A full-season commitment. We understand life is unpredictable and for those who have never farmed before, it's hard to really imagine what to expect, but our small farm will depend on you. If a crew member chooses to leave mid-season, we will be left to scramble.
  • Motivation. Our days can be long, but we all need to keep up our pace, efficiency, and motivation throughout the day to get everything done that needs to get done. Having a "what's next?" attitude to keep the day rolling is essential.
  • A positive outlook. Being able to laugh it off, laugh at yourself, laugh at us. Not letting the little things get you down. Being able to take corrections without getting your feelings hurt. We do not expect everyone to be in a happy mood every day, but we do expect people have a sense of humor, want to get along with everyone, and yearn for a positive experience. We do really appreciate cynical people too.
  • Punctuality. Your day starts at 8:00am and ends at 5:30pm. Some days are shorter, and some days could be longer if you'd like to stay to help finish a task.

Compensation

  • We start at $16/hour
  • After a 6-week period, we will offer raises based on your work ethic
  • Full Veggie CSA
  • Access to lots of seconds produce
  • $100 gear stipend with receipts
  • Likely year-end bonus based on hours worked!

"We felt like a team- very cooperative. I always felt able to ask questions and got solid answers"
